Sleep Walking

Introduction

Sleep walking is a medical problem. A person suffering from sleep walking tends to do things he would have done had he been awake. The patient walks on both his legs exactly as he would do while being awake. However, during this period the person is actually not conscious and at the end of the sleep walking period he cannot recall the sequence of events in any semblance.

Why does it happen?

Sleep walking affects a large percentage of the population but men are more susceptible to it. Children in their adolescent years are very prone to this problem. While ones genes are generally responsible for the manifestation of sleep walking, undue stress, anxiousness and other psychological problems also aggravate this malaise. Some doctors say this is caused when patients act out their dreams. This may be only partially correct because sleep walking is usually a precursor to the dream stage of sleep. The patients have been known to carry out their routine functions as if they were awake and yet not recalling most of the events at the end of the sleep walking period. Care, affection and other methods of alleviating emotional stress and tension in the patient results in a marked improvement in the general condition of patients of sleep walking.

Effects of Sleep Walking

Generally it is the patient suffering from sleep walking who is most affected. He is likely to hurt himself as he is not exactly conscious and, therefore, not aware of the consequences of his actions. But some patients are also known to commit heinous crimes in their sleep walking state. So all such patients must be helped to overcome their affliction. The simplest way to do so is to escort them back to their bed. They can then pass onto the deep sleep stage and wake up refreshed and without any recollections of the trauma they went through. Care needs to be taken so that such patients do not injure themselves inadverntly. The next step would naturally be to tackle the stress that caused the problem in the first place. But that is another story.

Resume

Sleep walking is a medical problem which must be tackled by medical experts who can go to the root cause of the psychological and emotional stress factors responsible for the malaise. Since it is more prevalent in young adolescents it is imperative that parents give special attention to ensuring a more responsive and pro active environment at homes. Inter active relationships at home can go a long way in taking care of sleep walking patients. Children must be encouraged to share their apprehensions and fears no matter how trivial they are. Parents can then address these issues and resolve them with just a little attention and care. The fact that there are more male sleep walking patients than female patients is also perhaps because men do not share their problems so easily. The caged up anxiety often culminates into the medical problem we now understand as sleep walking.

Random Sleeping Tip
There is another remedy for sleeping, which is wiggling of the toes. Since ancient times it is being thought that the feet are the source of control of energy of the entire body and that massaging different portions of it can cause benefit to the different organ systems. It is being said that the energy flows through the toes and that with wiggling of the toes you can control the energy flowing through your body and that you can make yourself relaxed by doing that and this will help you to sleep comfortably.
